Scrap Mahogany Desk

What do you do when someone gives you all the scrap from replacing their staircases with mahogany? First of all you thank them profusely! Then you set about figuring out what you are going to do with this beautiful wood, considering it is all 2 X 2s, a few 4 X 4s, and some 1 X 6 planks.I came up with a design for a desk that would use the scrap where it showed and use pine 2 X 4 where it wouldn’t.[/wpcol_1half][wpcol_1half_end id=”” class=”” style=””]Mahogany Desk [/wpcol_1half_end][wpcol_1half id=”” class=”” style=””] The other aspect I put in all my desk designs is to have no legs in the seating area. I like being able to move my chair from one end of the desk to the other without running into a desk leg. This means some sort of support that runs under the interior corner of the desk out to the edges. In this case, with the desk being longer on one edge than the other, to run that support into a side and on the other end into the back.

Mahogany Desk (3)[/wpcol_1half]

[wpcol_1half_end id=”” class=”” style=””] The 2 X 4 running under the main desk area gives it an amazing amount of support; without it that middle area of the desk wouldn’t even be possible. The legs are each 4 2 X 2 pieces of mahogany, squared off, and then glued together and cut to size. They bracket into the main desk piece so they can be removed. Otherwise this desk wouldn’t be movable into and out of rooms or houses.[/wpcol_1half_end][wpcol_1half id=”” class=”” style=””]

Mahogany Desk (2)

[wpcol_1half_end id=”” class=”” style=””]The finished product is beautiful. It was finished with just a few coats of polyurethane (water-based from Lowe’s). The upside of the hollow (and durable) underside is that most cords and cables can be clipped up and hidden. I installed a power strip up inside each end so they are the only cords visible.  [/wpcol_1half_end]
